This training session introduces early years practitioners to the concept of schemas and their significance in young children’s learning and development. Schemas are patterns of repeated behaviour that children use to explore and make sense of the world around them. By recognising and supporting schematic play, practitioners can deepen their understanding of children’s interests, motivations and developmental needs.

The session will explore the different types of schemas commonly observed in early years settings, such as trajectory, rotation, enclosure and transporting. Participants will consider practical strategies for observing, interpreting and responding to schematic behaviour in a way that supports meaningful, child-centred learning, in line with early years approaches in Wales

Course Outcomes

  •  Understand what schemas are and explain their role in early childhood development.
  •  Identify common types of schemas through observation of children’s play.
  •  Recognise how schematic play supports learning across the developmental domains.
  •  Reflect on current practice and how well it supports children’s schematic interests.
  •  Plan and provide enabling environments that respond to and extend schematic play.
  •  Use observation and assessment to inform responsive, child-led provision.
