This professional learning session will support practitioners in developing effective approaches to early literacy through stories, reading, songs, and rhymes within the Curriculum for Non-Maintained Settings. Participants will explore how rich language experiences and high-quality interactions help to build children’s communication, vocabulary, listening skills, phonological awareness, and early reading development.

The session will provide opportunities for practitioners to reflect on current practice and consider how literacy experiences can be meaningfully embedded across the learning environment and daily routines. Through discussion and practical ideas, participants will develop strategies to create engaging, play-based literacy opportunities that foster children’s enjoyment of books, storytelling, and rhymes while supporting confidence and progression in early literacy learning.

Course Outcomes

• Develop an increased understanding of how early literacy experiences support children’s communication, language, and emergent reading development within the Curriculum for Non-Maintained Settings.
• Explore the role of stories, songs, rhymes, and shared reading experiences in developing children’s listening, attention, vocabulary, phonological awareness, and enjoyment of reading.
• Reflect on current practice and identify opportunities to embed meaningful literacy experiences throughout the learning environment and daily routines.
• Gain practical strategies to support children’s early literacy development through play-based and child-centred approaches.
• Develop confidence in using rhymes, repetition, and storytelling to promote language development, engagement, and early reading skills.
• Consider how observation and responsive interactions can be used to support progression in early literacy learning and encourage positive attitudes towards books and reading.
