HANEN – Teacher Talk

Description

Teacher Talk is an evidence-based programme which covers key principles and core strategies to help all children in your setting build language and social skills, no matter what their learning and communication styles are.

The programme is run by Hanen-certified Speech and Language Therapists who work within the Caerphilly Early Years team.

The programme will show you how to use everyday conversations, play and daily routines to promote the communication and social development of all children. Each strategy is designed to engage and maintain the interest of the children, making language and learning a fun and natural part of their day.

The programme is a mixture of virtual group information sessions and face-to-face 1:1 sessions in your setting, which gives you an opportunity to practise and discuss strategies with the trainer.

Using the Teacher Talk approach ensures that every child in your setting has the best opportunity to develop their language. Language is well evidenced as being crucial for wellbeing and later-life outcomes. Teacher Talk strategies are beneficial for every child in your setting, including:

• Children at risk of language delay
• Children with language delay
• Children with English as an additional language
• Children whose language appears to be developing typically

This course comprises of 6 sessions. 3 sessions will be virtual workshops in a group. 3 sessions will be face-to-face 1:1 sessions in your setting, where the trainer visits you. Click the link below for course specific dates / times.

Teacher Talk

To attend the course, you will need:

• To commit to attending all 6 sessions.
• A device with a microphone, camera and internet connection for virtual workshop attendance.
• A quiet space where you will not be interrupted for the virtual workshops.

Please be aware the setting visits will require you to interact with children and reflect on this as part of learning. It will be your responsibility to establish consent for the children to be recorded for the purposes of staff training. Recordings are not kept and are deleted before the end of the 1:1 visit.

Outcomes

The Teacher Talk Programme provides you with practical, research-based strategies for:

• Identify children’s conversational styles and the role adults play in interactions
• Implement six steps to following the child’s lead:  Observe, Wait and Listen, Be Face to Face, Imitate, Interpret, Comment, and Join in and Play
• Help children become better conversation partners by using appropriate questions, comments and turn-taking cues
• Use five important steps to ensure that no child is left out of the interaction during group activities

Each setting will receive a workbook relevant to the programme.
