Welsh Language and Culture in Early Years Settings

Course Description

This course is designed to support early years practitioners in embedding Welsh language and culture meaningfully within their settings. Aligned with the Curriculum for Wales and the Early Childhood Play, Learning and Care (ECPLC) framework, the course explores practical strategies for introducing and celebrating the Welsh language, traditions, and identity in ways that are inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate. Participants will gain confidence in using Welsh in everyday routines, play, and interactions, and will learn how to create a culturally rich environment that fosters a sense of belonging and pride in Welsh heritage.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of Welsh language and culture in early years education and its role in supporting identity and belonging.
  • Confidently use Incidental Welsh language in daily routines, songs, stories, and interactions with children.
  • Create culturally rich environments that reflect and celebrate Welsh traditions, festivals, and community life.
  • Support children’s language development through bilingual approaches that are playful, inclusive, and responsive.
  • Engage families and communities in promoting Welsh language and culture within the setting.
