Solihull Approach in Early Years

Course Description

This course introduces childcare practitioners to the Solihull Approach, a relationship-based model that integrates emotional containment, reciprocity, and behaviour management to support children’s emotional well-being and development. Rooted in child development, and attachment theories, the Solihull Approach helps practitioners understand and respond to children’s behaviour through a lens of emotional regulation and secure relationships. Participants will explore how to apply the model in everyday practice, fostering stronger connections with children and families, and promoting a nurturing environment that supports healthy development.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the core principles of the Solihull Approach, including containment, reciprocity, and behaviour as communication.
  • Apply the Solihull model in daily childcare practice to support children’s emotional regulation and secure attachments.
  • Recognise and respond to children’s emotional needs through attuned interactions and reflective practice.
  • Strengthen relationships with families by using the Solihull Approach to support parental understanding and engagement.
  • Promote a consistent, emotionally supportive environment that enhances children’s well-being, resilience, and developmental outcomes.
