New Assessment Arrangements for 0–3

Course Description

This course introduces early years practitioners to the new assessment arrangements for babies and young children aged 0–3, aligned with the Early Childhood Play, Learning and Care (ECPLC) framework. Assessment in the early years is a vital tool for understanding each child’s unique developmental journey and for supporting their well-being, sense of belonging, and progression. The course focuses on four key areas of development: social and emotional, physical, communication and language, and exploration and play. These areas are drawn from the ECPLC Developmental Pathways and provide a consistent foundation for future learning and assessment. Through practical strategies and reflective practice, participants will learn how to observe, assess, and respond to children’s needs in a meaningful and developmentally appropriate way.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand their role as enabling adults in observing and supporting babies and young children’s development.
  2. Embed the Notice–Analyse–Respond cycle into everyday practice to inform responsive and intentional interactions.
  3. Use observations to inform planning and provision that meets individual developmental needs.
  4. Identify when babies and young children may require additional support and know how to respond appropriately.
  5. Confidently use the new documentation to record initial and exit assessments in line with ECPLC guidance.
  6. Deepen their understanding of the developmental pathways for children aged 2–3 years.
  7. Apply practical strategies for observing and assessing progress across the four key developmental areas.
